Updated Resources - Our Tax Dollars at Work!

Nine new and updated websites and two toll-free telephone numbers are available for job seekers, employers and career professionals from the Dept. of Labor, Education and Training Administration. Gay Gilbert, Office of Workforce Investment, US Dept. of Labor, Employment and Training Administration shared these and others with us at our July Program.

CareerInfoNet provides data for people exploring career options. ServiceLocator will find the nearest OneStopCenter. Other resources include Competency Models Clearinghouse in 3 high-growth industries (so far) which can help in upgrading skills for our current and future work world. These competencies are linked to OnetOnline. Workforce3One offers workforce professionals, employers and educators strategies and tools enabling individuals’ understanding of what it takes to be successful in the 21st century. Two tools are designed to help military spouses or those transitioning from military. And the OnlineCoach helps you navigate all these resources!

    Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

    by Marc Prensky, 2001

Kim R. Wells, Director, Career Services Office Howard University, has shared with us two articles by Marc Prensky that explore the impact of screen-based interaction and socialization of today's youth. The articles primary focus is on the challenge for educators. The research indicates that they really do think differently. We can connect the dots for new workers and their co-workers as this digital generation enters the workforce. A few of those impacts include how new workers ramp-up to the work world, managing expectations (theirs and older workers' expectations or assumptions of them), different approaches to accomplishing work and establishing networks. They will have different expectations about career management and new skills that can either enhance or de-rail them.

Vital Friends, The People You Can't Afford to Live Without, by Tom Rath, Gallup Press, 2006.

Reviewed by Anne Hull, Hull Strategies, LLC, March 2007

Based on a special research study on the homeless in 1991, Tom Rath was intrigued with how dependent we are on other people. Most of the research and studies have been on the individual, work teams and social networks. But little, until now, looks at the single relationship between two people. "During our teenage years, we spend nearly one-third of our time with friends. For the rest of our lives, the average time spent with friends is less than 10%." Rath delves into the Gallup Q12 research findings in which people said they would rather have a best friend at work than a 10% pay raise. This book includes a pass code to an online survey to help the reader determine which of eight vital roles the people in their lives play. Through this understanding we can adjust our expectations of the important people in our lives and how to build and extend these connections. We usually give different things than we receive. Some may balk, as I did, at cataloging my friends, yet the flip side is that I can see how I can strengthen those relationships and be a better friend to them. I finished the book thinking about the haunting question he begins it with, "Who expects you to be somebody?"

Warning: Phishing Off the Career Dock

    By Shela Turpin-Forster

The extent to which job seekers are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated phishers was detailed in a Washington Post Business section article, 02/10/07. Two sites were named as clearly identified culprits in these schemes: USA:Voice and Instant Human Resources (with parent Internet Solutions). Popular sites such as Monster, Yahoo and CareerBuilder have removed ads from these two bogus companies and have taken other precautions in recent years to prevent the use of their sites for spamming and criminal purposes.

Thus far, the main thrust of these scams in the career field is to obtain basic contact information from users of such sites under the pretense of identifying them as candidates for appropriate jobs. All the job seeker ever receives in follow up is a lot of unsolicited email. Some cases, involving requests for personal information including social security numbers before further candidate consideration, have resulted in identity theft and significant financial loss.

Career coaches and counselors may want to provide a cautionary note on this danger when discussing Internet job search with clients. The article lists resources and contacts. Shelacamille@aol.com
